Zermatt is a stunning town at the foot of the great Matterhorn mountain in the south of Switzerland. Originally an agricultural community up until the 1800s, today, Zermatt is a renowned ski resort. The name Zermatt stems from the matten or meadows of the valley. The German "Zur Matte" translates to "in the meadow".
Zermatt is most well-known for its pollution-free air. Cars are not allowed in the town, so passenger vehicles such as electric shuttles, taxis and buses are used. Horse-drawn carriages are also used to get around. The pure air of Zermatt will leave you feeling healthy and livelier.
Zermatt ski resort offers year-round skiing and snowboarding. Winter in Zermatt means more than 313 km of ski runs are available to explore. The Zermatt skiing area includes the longest run in Switzerland, measuring 22km. Adventurous types can experience the rush of the glacier runs on Gorner and Findel with sheer drops and numerous crevasses. The Matterhorn ski safari is a day of adventure with 15 runs. Zermatt also has brilliant piste restaurants where you can enjoy a sumptuous meal in a warm atmosphere. Popular heli-skiing replaces ski-lifts with a helicopter allowing you to begin your run from a variety of points. Gravity Park is perfect for the youth and young at heart. Here you can have fun on half pipes, rails and jumps. Not a skier? Why not try a hiking trail between the months of November and April. Alternatively Zermatt has 5 snowshoe trails just waiting to be explored.
There are many points from which to view Zermatt's striking surroundings. The Matterhorn glacier is Europe's highest sightseeing spot. A lift will carry you to this amazing point from which you can enjoy a 360° view. Take in the absolute magnificence of the Swiss, French and Italian Alps. It is breathtaking.
