Housed in the majestic Palazzo degli Uffizi in the picturesque city of Florence, Italy, the Uffizi Gallery is among the oldest and most renowned art museums in Europe. Taking its name from its original purpose, that of being offices (uffizi) for the magistrates of Florence, the construction of the palace was started in 1560 by Giorgio Vasari and completed in 1581 by subsequent builders, while still keeping to Vasari’s original and distinctive design. As an architect and painter, Vasari brought the best of both of these professions together with a result that has been recognized as exceptional by architectural historians over the centuries.

The Alhambra, located in Granada, Spain, is a mysterious and historically significant palace complex, which has also become a popular tourist attraction. Situated on a hilltop, overlooking its breathtaking surroundings, the exact date of construction of the structure is unknown and neither is the identity of its architect. It is known that the Alhambra was only a small complex before interest was shown in it during the eleventh century, with major renovations and construction taking place during the fourteenth century, estimated dates being 1338 to 1390. Though constructed to serve a military purpose, as it was a military area, kings and nobility took up residence here and contributed to its illustrious heritage.

For Charles Garnier, the designing of the Palais Garnier would cement his name into the history of Paris and the world of architecture. This magnificent opera house has been studied by future generations and inspired architects that have followed him. When Napoleon III requested designs for the opera house in 1858, a competition was sparked, but Garnier’s design overshadowed those of more than a hundred and seventy others, and was unanimously chosen for the construction. Today, the Palais Garnier is a wonderful attraction in Paris, which still inspires and leaves visitors astounded by its beauty.

Many people readily associate Italy’s city of Venice with love and romance, picturing a gondola slowly making its way along the city’s canals while the couple being ferried gaze lovingly into each other’s eyes. There is little doubt that the canals of Venice are a major attraction of this picturesque city and you certainly don't have to be part of a couple to enjoy exploring the canals. The Grand Canal winds its way through the city in an “S” shape, with a network of smaller canals meeting up with it at various points. In the past the canals were the life-blood of the city and still serve as a means of getting around, with water buses and water taxis providing public transport. The majority of visitors to Venice prefer using the gondolas which allow them to see some of the many attractions of Venice in a leisurely fashion.

Holland is a beautiful country and its people show a deep appreciation for their artistic and cultural heritage. This appreciation will be brought to the attention of the world during 2009 and 2010 as the top ten museums in the four largest cities in the country join forces to present a wide-ranging art and cultural event under the banner of 'Holland Art Cities'. Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht and The Hague will participate in this large-scale initiative, which will see the Hermitage and Stedelijk Museums in Amsterdam re-open their doors following extensive renovations.
